Todies Todidae
This is a single genus family. The five species of tody are restricted to the Greater Antilles, located in the West Indies. Fortunately, none of these "cute little buggers" are
threatened, although the Narrow-billed Tody may be diminishing in numbers. They are closely related to the kingishers (Alcedinidae), and they both
nest in tunnels excavated in soil embankments. They are surprisingly tame, which makes them one of the most photogenic of all the bird families in the West Indies.
Todus

There are five species in the genus.
The Broad-billed Tody Todus subulatus is one of two todies restricted to Hispaniola. This was by far the
commonest and most widespread of the two todies that I encountered. We affectionately called them "fart birds" due to the similar
sounding call they often make. Photographed just west off Puerto Escondido, near Duverge, Dominican Republic.
