Tinamous Tinamidae

There are 9 genera within this family of which 1 is thus far listed below. There are 47 species of tinamous, including 5 that are considered vulnerable and another 3 near-threatened. These ground-dwelling birds are all restricted to the New World.

Crypturellus

There are 21 species within this genus, making it the largest in the family.

The Thicket Tinamou Crypturellus cinnamomeus is common in lowland and foothill mature and second growth forests of Central America. They range from Mexico, south to northwestern Costa Rica. This bird was photographed in the Santa Rosa National Park, Guanacaste, Costa Rica, June 2007.
