Thrushes and Allies Turdidae

This large family is divided into 22 genera, of which 5 are thus far listed below. Of the 172 species, 4 are considered critically endangered, 4 are endangered, 9 are vulnerable, and 24 others are considered near-threatened. Members are this family are found on every continent except Antarctica.

Monticola


There are 14 species in this genus. Some taxonomists place this genus in the Muscicapidae family.

Myophonus

There are 9 species in this genus.

Zoothera


There are 38 species in this genus.

Ixoreus

This is the only member of the genus. Some taxonomists place this species in the Zoothera genus.

The Varied Thrush Ixoreus naevius is found in Alaska south to northern California. Some northern birds migrate south for the winter to as far south as southern California and nortwestern Mexico. This adult was a stray that spent several weeks during winter at the Rio Salado habitat restoration area, Phoenix, Arizona, January 2008.






Sialia

There are 3 species within this genus.

The Mountain Bluebird Sialia currucoides is found in western North America, from Alaska south to central Mexico. During the winter months they migrate to the southern part of their range, often forming large flocks. This adult male Mountain Bluebird was photographed near Animas, Hidalgo County, New Mexico, December 2006.
