Thick-knees Burhinidae

Ths family consists of 2 genera containing 9 species. The Bush Thick-knee Burhinus grallarius and Beach Thick-knee Esacus giganteus are both considered near-threatened. Members of this family are distributed on every continent except Antarctica. The greatest diversity of species are found in the Old World.

The Double-striped Thick-knee Burhinus bistriatus is found in open grassland and bushy savanna from southern Mexico, south to Venezuela, Guyana and extreme northern Brazil. Photographed at the Santa Rosa National Park, Guanacaste, Costa Rica.
