This Old World family, with the majority of species restricted to Southeast Asia and Africa, consists of 38 genera of which 4 are thus
far described below. Some authorities also lump the Grouse Tetreonidae, Guineafowl Numididae and Turkeys Meleagridae in
with this family. Unfortunately, many of the 155 recognized species are listed as endangered or threatened.

Arborophila

There are 18 species in this genus. The Sichuan Partridge Arborophila rufipectus and Orange-necked Partridge
Arborophila davidi are both endangered. Another 3 species are near-threatened and another 5 are
listed as vulnerable.

Lothura

There are 11 species in this single genus. The Edward's Pheasant Lophura edwardsi and Vietnamese Pheasant Lophura hatinhensis are both
endangered. Another 3 species are near-threatened and 4 more are vulnerable.

Also known as a Ring-necked Pheasant, this female Common Pheasant Phasianus colchicus was at the Titchwell Nature Reserve, Norfolk, England, June 2009.
