Pardalotes Pardalotidae

The pardalotes are a single genus family. These small brightly plumaged birds are confined to Australia. They are acrobatic and often hang upside down to forage. The endangered Forty-spotted Pardalote Pardalotus quadragintus is restricted to coastal southeast Tasmania.

There are 4 species within this genus.

There are several distinct races of the Striated Pardalote Pardalotus striatus that differ in number of primaries edged white, crown-streaking, amount of white on the wing bar, and the color of their rumps. They are found in eucalyptus forests and woodlands across Australia. This bird of the "melanocephalus" race was photographed at the Cairn's crocodile farm, near Edmonton, Queensland, Australia.
