Megapodes Megapodiidae

The 19 species in this family are divided into 7 genera. They are mainly distributed in the Australasian region. The Maleo Macrocephalon maleo, Micronesian Megapode Megapodius laperouse and Polynesian Megapode Megapodius pritchardii are all considered endangered. Another 6 species are vulnerable and 2 are near-threatened.

Alectura

This is the only member of the genus.

The Australian Brush-turkey Alectura lathami is confined to eastern Australia, from the Cape York Peninsula, south to New South Wales. It has been successfully introduced to Kangaroo Island, South Australia. This individual was photographed in the grounds of the Ivy Tea Cottages, Paluma, northeast Queensland, Australia.
