Limpkin Aramidae
The Limpkin is a single species family. There are two distinct races. The northern pictus with white spotting on the wings and mantle, and the
nominate guarauna of South America, with unmarked brown wings and mantle. They feed primarily on apple snails (Pomacea).
Aramus

This is the sole member of the genus and family.
The Limpkin Aramus guarauna is a New World species that inhabits freshwater marshes and swamps from Florida, south through
Central and much of South America. They can be very tame, and combined with the fact that are considered to be one of the best-tasting game birds,
meant they were once heavily persecuted. This individual was photographed at the Santo Domingo botanical gardens, Dominican Republic.
