Kinglets and Firecrests Regulidae

Consisting of 1 genus which contains 6 species, this family is among the smallest of all passerines. They are restricted to North America and Eurasia.

Regulus

There are 6 species within this genus. Some authors also split the Tenerife Goldcrest Regulus teneriffae from the Goldcrest Regulus regulus.

The tiny Ruby-crowned Kinglets Regulus calendula have a distinct habit of constantly flicking their wings, which gives them a nervous look. The red crown patch of the male is usually concealed, but is distinctly raised when excited. Their range extends from Alaska, south to Guatemala. This Ruby-crowned Kinglet was photographed at Gilbert Water Ranch, near Phoenix, Arizona.
