Jacanas Jacanidae

There are 6 genera within this family. The 8 species are found on every continent, except Europe and the Antarctica. Their extremely long toes enable them to walk with ease on floating lily pads and other aquatic vegetation, without fear of sinking.

Jacana

There are 2 species in this genus.

Northern Jacanas Jacana spinosa are common to fairly common in permanent and seasonally flooded wetlands from Mexico, south to western Panama. They also inhabit the Caribbean islands of Cuba, Jamaica and Hispaniola. Ocassionally, they can also be found in Arizona and southern Texas. This adult was photographed near the Volcan Arenal National Park, Alajuela, Costa Rica.
