Donacobius Donacobiidae
The Donacobius is a single species family of uncertain origin. At first glimpse, it looks like a mimid Mimidae and was known as the
"Black-capped Mockingthrush". After several years of intense studies, it was proved to be a cooperative breeder and was grouped with the wrens
Troglodytidae.
More recently, DNA research has shown it to be more closely assosiated with the Old World white-eyes Zosteropidae and prinias Cisticolidae.
At least for now, it is probably best left in it's own monotypic family. For more information, go to the official website of the:
South American Check-list Committee.
Donacobius
This is the sole member of the genus.
The Donacobius Donacobius atricapillus is a New World species that ranges from tropical eastern Panama, south to eastern
Bolivia and northeastern Argentina. They are relatively easy to see in lowland marshy or grassy areas near water. This bird was one of several that I
observed at the incredible Amazonia Lodge, Madre de Dios, Peru.
