Cormorants Phalacrocoracidae

The family consists of a single genus. The Chatham Islands Shag Phalacrocorax onslowi is listed as critically endangered. The Flightless Cormorant Phalacrocorax harrisi, Bank Cormorant Phalacrocorax neglectus, and Pitt Island Shag Phalacrocorax featherstoni are all endangered. Another 4 species are near-threatened and 6 are vulnerable.

There are 33 species within this genus.

Imperial Shags Phalacrocorax atriceps are found along the coasts of southern Chile and Argentina, on the Antarctic Peninsula, and on many islands in the Southern Hemisphere. The Antarctic Shag Phalacrocorax (a.) bransfieldensis, South Georgia Shag Phalacrocorax (a.) georgianus, Heard Island Shag Phalacrocorax (a.) nivalis, Crozet Shag Phalacrocorax (a.) melanogenis, Macquarie Shag Phalacrocorax (a.) purpurascens and Kerguelen Shag Phalacrocorax (a.) verrucosus were all recently lumped with the Imperial Shag. These birds of the nominate race were photographed at Ajax Bay, near San Carlos, Falkland Islands.
